In the past the Korean scientific community was hesitant about working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credibility. But silence is no longer an option.
The STR has been fighting to eliminate the content on evolution from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is only one aspect of the way in which the development paradigm has changed.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a theory of science that explains changes in genetic traits over time. The theory is based on the fact that living creatures adapt to their environment, which can result in variations in genes or whole genomes. These changes can over many generations lead to the creation of new species. Natural selection is the dominant theory of evolution. It describes how individuals who have advantages survive and reproduce more than those with less advantageous traits. This differing reproduction may be a catalyst to the development and emergence of new species.
The word "evolution" is derived from the Latin word for unraveling or revealing, however the concept has had a variety of meanings over the years as it has taken shape in the sciences and elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into a new species. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist pupil who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.
Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process in which living organisms develop traits that increase their chances of survival or conceiving offspring. As time passes the genetic variability could cause the emergence of completely new biological functions or physical traits in the same population. The change in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and it drives most evolutionary change. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolutionary because they aren't passed on to the next generation.
Creationists are using the argument that evolution is controversial, in spite of the fact that it has been proven to be accurate by thousands of scientific tests and that it has stood the test of time. They argue that the theory shouldn't be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in textbooks for high schools. This includes the removal of all references to the evolutionary roots of humans and Archaeopteryx - a feathered dinosaur believed to be the bird's ancestor.
Why is Evolution Important?
Evolution explains how Earth and all its living creatures came into existence. It is one of the fundamentals of biology, and aids scientists discover how living things operate and develop. Evolution also shows how different species are linked. Scientists study evolution to understand the natural world, and also to make important discoveries like the development of new drugs.
The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains so much about the universe and life on earth and has been rigorously tested and confirmed over a long period of time. Many people, including religious leaders, support the scientific theory of evolution. It is important to understand that evolutionary biology doesn't contradict religious beliefs, since the theory only deals with processes, objects, and events in the physical world.
Many religious people have come up with a way of reconciling evolution with their convictions. Certain Christians for instance, believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans share an ancestral connection to other animals.
It is important for scientists to stand up for the teaching of evolution. Unfortunately, in a few countries around the world, anti-evolution sentiment is growing. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit the teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research is pushing for the elimination of textbook content about the evolution of horses as well as the avian ancestral Archaeopteryx.
It is vital to remember that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a wide variety of sources, including fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.
The majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. This belief is based on various reasons. What is Creationism?
Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken as such. Many creationists are Christians However, not all. Creationists are generally divided into two groups: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.
YECs are the most well known type of creationist and they believe that God created the universe exactly as described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is true and that the universe and the life on Earth was created only recently.
OECs may be less popular however their beliefs are as fierce like the YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is an untruth.
Both forms of creationism deny that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis can explain the origins of life on Earth. They assert that evolution is inconceivable because it requires miracles. The founders of modern science shunned miracles out of fear they would lose their credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their view “theistic evolution.” This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of species created." This theory states that God creates species from scratch and then allows these to evolve over time. These evolution changes will eventually result in new species that are similar to the original.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event known as the Great Flood. They believe that the first species were created simultaneously, and that they developed gradually afterward. They deny the notion of abiogenesis and claim that self-replicating living cannot come from nonliving matter.
In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution at schools. Numerous professional organizations, like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education endorse this view, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, certain scientists and educational institutions are more flexible and permit the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curricula.
What exactly is Creationism in Korea?
When people think about creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their textbooks. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. STR has secured its first victory in eliminating examples of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. Its sights are now set on the removal of excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution as well.
STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families as well as individual members. Its aim is to root out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists who live in the US. A survey of biology students teachers found that about half do not believe in evolution. The reasons for this are not clear but could be due to religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists across the country.
The KACR has achieved a lot through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and an ebook. One of these was an educational textbook on natural sciences with a cosmological perspective. This led to an interest in the college community. In 1991, a professor, together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.
On August 7 and 8, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand. KACR and its members have given lectures on creation science at major seminaries too. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
